CEFR placement test for a whole class, from real writing and speaking

CEFRHub places your learners on the CEFR scale, from A1 to C2, from their own productions: a written text or a speaking recording, in English or French. Each report gives the level, the sub-level and the descriptors, in under 3 minutes. The first evaluation is free, with no credit card.

Placement support tool, not a certifying exam: the teacher keeps the final judgment. It assesses written or spoken production; it does not measure reading or listening comprehension.

How do you place a whole class from real work?

  1. Choose the task: a text to write or a speaking recording, in the language you teach.
  2. Collect the work. You upload each learner's text or recording yourself. With the organization plans (Team, Business and Enterprise), you can also invite learners by email to the placement test, up to 100 at a time: they take it in their browser, without creating an account, after giving consent; the link is valid for 72 hours.
  3. CEFRHub analyzes each production against the descriptors of the CEFR and its Companion Volume (Council of Europe, 2020): level, sub-level, strengths and points to work on.
  4. You form the groups. In the placement test, an automated check flags results to review, and you can record the level you retain alongside the one proposed by the AI.

What do you get for each learner?

  • The CEFR level, from A1 to C2, and the sub-level (for example A2.1 or B1.2).
  • Strengths and points to work on, linked to the CEFR descriptors.
  • The report as a PDF with Professional, Power and Expert; with the organization plans, bulk export as PDF, Excel or CSV (up to 100 evaluations per export).

Placement test or quiz: what is the difference?

A quiz and a production do not measure the same thing. To form groups, they complement each other.

Ways to place learners: what they measure and their main limitation
MethodWhat it measuresMain limitation
Online quiz or multiple choiceWhat it measures: Recognition of grammar and vocabularyMain limitation: Does not show what the learner can produce in writing or speaking
Work marked by the teacherWhat it measures: Writing or speaking, on a chosen taskMain limitation: Slow to mark for a whole class, and the mark varies from one marker to another
Work analyzed with CEFRHubWhat it measures: Writing or speaking, placed on the CEFR scale with its descriptors, in under 3 minutesMain limitation: Placement support, not certifying; comprehension is not measured

What can a learner do at each level?

Groups are most often formed around levels A2, B1 and B2. The CEFR describes what a learner can do at each of them.

What a learner can do at levels A2, B1 and B2, based on the CEFR global scale (reworded)
LevelWhat the learner can do
A2What the learner can do: Understand sentences and frequently used expressions on familiar topics; communicate in simple, routine tasks; describe in simple terms their background and immediate environment.
B1What the learner can do: Get by in everyday situations on familiar topics; produce a simple, connected text; describe an experience and briefly give reasons for an opinion.
B2What the learner can do: Interact with fluency and spontaneity; express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics; defend a viewpoint by giving the advantages and disadvantages.

English placement test for ESL classes

Learners write or record themselves in English, and CEFRHub places each production on the CEFR scale, with the same benchmarks as in French. You can compare your English and French groups on one shared scale.

Frequently asked questions

Does CEFRHub replace an official test?

No. It is a placement support tool, not certifying. If a learner needs an official result, they must take a recognized exam.

How long does it take to get a learner's level?

Under 3 minutes after the production is sent. The report gives the level, the sub-level, strengths and points to work on.

Do learners need to create an account?

No. In the placement test of the organization plans (Team, Business and Enterprise), the learner receives a link and takes the test in their browser, without an account. With the other plans, the teacher uploads the work.

Which skills does CEFRHub assess?

Writing (a text) and speaking (a recording). Reading and listening comprehension are not measured.

Is the level reviewed by a human?

The level is proposed by the AI, which never changes it on its own. In the placement test, a check flags results to review, and the teacher can record the level they retain.

Where is learner data stored?

Data is stored and analyzed in Canada. Retention of texts and results, and people's rights, are described in the privacy policy.

Can CEFRHub be used with learners who are minors?

CEFRHub's services are not intended for persons under 13 years of age, and you must be at least 13 years old to create an account. The rules on minors and consent are set out in the privacy policy (section “Protection of Minors”) and the terms of service.
